Essentials of Islam Course

This introductory year of Islamic studies covers the essentials every Muslim must learn. Subjects include: Aqeedah (Beliefs), Fiqh (Legal Rulings), Seerah (Prophetic Biography) and Tazkiyyah (Islamic Spirituality).

 

Course Details

This course has four essential modules:

Key text: Aqeedah al-Tahawiyya of Imam Abu Ja’far al-Tahawi al-Hanafi (239-321 AH)

This module will teach you to:

  • Explain the pillars of faith (Iman). 
  • Describe the attributes of Allah Most High 
  • Describe the attributes of the prophets and Messengers 
  • Summarise the beliefs of Muslims regarding angels, Divine books, Divine decree, Day of Judgement, and Afterlife. 
  • Distinguish between innovation and faith.

Key text: Noor ul-Idah of Abu al-Ikhlas Hasan bin Ammar al-Shurunbulali (994 AH1069 AH) – Chapters on Purification and Prayer

This module will teach you to:

  • Be able Perform A ritual purification bath and ablutions for prayer.
  • Know what nullifies your state of purification.
  • Learn what impurities are in Islam and how to remove them.
  • Be able to perform your 5 daily prayers, know their times and how many Rakats each one comprises of.
  • Learn the details of the prerequisites of Salah such as covering the Awrah and facing the Qiblah.
  • Know what does and does not break your prayer.
  • Learn the differences between the obligatory, necessary and sunnah components of the prayer.

Key text: Nur al-‘Uyun (Shams ad-Din Muhammad ibn Muhammad ibn Sayyid an-Naas (671-734H)

This module will teach you to:

  • Be able to recall the major life events of the Prophet Muhammad from the Makki and Madani periods
  • Know several important personalities landmarks and achievements during the Prophetic Biography.
  • Appreciate the struggle of the Prophet Muhammad and the early Muslims.
  • Learn the physical description of the Prophet Muhammad
  • Know the Prophet Muhammad’s special qualities and miracles.
  • Recognise the rights the Messenger of Allah has over his followers.

Key Text: Ayyuhal Walad (O Son) Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (450 AH – 505 AH)

This module will teach you to:

  • Improve your character so that you are fit to be Gods servant.
  • Be concerned with the spirit and the feelings of the heart while you perform your rituals or apply the laws in your practical lives.
  • Discover your faults and shortcomings, humble yourselves and offer sincere repentance to God.
  • Maintain correct state of the heart: how to reply to God, how to surrender to God, how to humble yourselves before God and how to remember God.
  • Be content with His decrees and how to reflect on His incredible creation.
